Madeleine Bernatchez
Madeleine is a Montreal-based artist with 20 years of experience in design for the performing arts. After receiving her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, Madeleine co-founded Sintroca, a Los Angeles-based theatre company known for its hybrid mix of digital technology and burlesque. She also served as the theatre’s artistic director.
Re-locating to NYC, Madeleine worked as a prop and set designer at the Ontological-Hysteric Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop, and Circus Amok. She collaborated with artists like Mikhail Baryshnikov, Martha Clarke, Philip Glass, Susan-Lori Parks, Nataki Garrett, and Robert Cantarella.
Madeleine was the principal set designer for Michel Vinaver’s 11 Septembre 2001, with minimal, video-heavy staging, presented in Paris, Montpelier, and Dijon. In 2008, USITT magazine named her one of the ‘Women Designers to Watch.’
Returning to Montreal in 2010, Madeleine worked with Cirque du Soleil on eight different productions, including Messi10 in Barcelona in 2020, Fuzion in Jeddah, and Sarwat Watan in Ryadh in 2022.
As a designer well-versed in new media and big-top theatrics, her background in fine arts left her with a deep appreciation for material objects and their ability to transform space.
Beyond her work in the performance arts, Madeleine created and ran Couleur-Moi, an innovative and successful children's clothing company, for which she was a guest on Radio-Canada's Dragon's Den in 2018. More recently, she completed the exhibition design for the Pointe à Callière Museum’s outdoor archeological site, A Parliament Under Your Feet in Montreal’s Old Port.
With Supply + Demand, Madelein’s creativity and expertise provide the most beneficial multi-sensory experiences for all productions and environments.
